Defining Success –
Ralph Waldo Emerson: "The definition of success: To laugh much; to win respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one's self; to leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is to have succeeded."
Relative street philosopher: "There is only one success - to be able to spend your life in your own way."
Everyone’s definition of success is different. My experience has been, however, that in order to achieve true and lasting success, one needs to do the INNER and OUTER work. What do I mean by this, you ask? While attending graduate school at the University of Santa Monica, the facilitators emphasized working on all levels of consciousness: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It’s important to consider each area when thinking about success.
How do you define success? It’s your definition that’s most important. When you take away the “should’s” and “have to’s,” what’s really important to you?
For me, I define success as never looking back on my life and thinking, “what if?” and “if only.” It’s about taking risks and not having regrets. In order for that to be possible, I tend to my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I exercise, read, learn, study, seek out mentors and coaches, take time to play and have fun, and engage in spiritual practices that calm and center me. These things give me the courage and strength to take the necessary risks that lead to a life beyond boundaries.
I encourage you to take the time to create a definition of success for yourself. Think about how you want your life to look in all areas. Once you do that, you can decide what the next best step is for you to take on the road of life.
Here’s to your success …
Always Dream BIG!
